IPL 2019: The rise and rise of the Rahul and Deepak, the Chahar Brothers
Taking the immaculate tradition of siblings cum cricketers ahead in Indian cricket, the Chahar brothers have impressed one and all with their consistent performances for their respective teams in the current IPL season.
The two cousins, who play for Rajasthan, have finally managed to constantly feature and star for their teams simultaneously. In the previous editions, whilst Deepak was playing many matches, Rahul remained in the shadows of the other spinners in Mumbai Indians.
The rise of Rahul Chahar…
This time around though, an injury to Mayank Markande allowed Rahul to play a game, and he hasn’t looked back thereafter. Accordingly, he has pushed Markande, who is in national reckoning now, into the shadows and has become the lead spinner for the three-time champions.
The fact that he possesses innate talent was never a doubt, but the responsibility and level-headedness with which he has gracefully embraced his job and managed to hold up on his own even when the momentum is in opposition’s favor is really praiseworthy.
For instance, take Mumbai Indians’ second encounter against Kings XI Punjab into consideration. At a time when the likes of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul were going bonkers against the bowling lineup, Rahul was able to slow down the momentum of the game, which thereby resulted in wickets for other bowlers.
In a game where every Mumbai Indians’ bowler of 8.50 RPO or more, Rahul returned with figures of 4-0-27-0. Though he was unable to scalp a dismissal, he still managed to notch nip off the surface and outwitted the likes of Gayle and David Miller in this process.
However, the younger Chahar has already picked nine wickets in seven matches for Mumbai Indians and looks set to take a step up in his career quite soon. He will also benefit by playing in a time when wrist-spinners are actually revered and are in high demand in the cricketing circuit, and someone as talented as Rahul will definitely be sane enough to extract the most out of it.
Deepak Chahar has been performing consistently…
On the other hand, the older one, Deepak, is definitely in good hands whilst playing under the tutelage of MS Dhoni. Dhoni has made a name for himself by working his magic around rather unseasoned bowlers, and he seems to have done the same with Deepak currently.
The bowler’s strength is to bowl with the new ball and generate swing from surfaces that don’t provide him much help either. He tends to knock off a wicket or two and bowls at an economical rate. The fact that his captain has given him a proper role to do the same is noteworthy, and Deepak should be applauded for making the most of the given opportunities too.
He has not been overawed by being one of the strike bowlers of the most successful franchise in IPL history. Chahar’s ability to use the long handle well enough makes him a probable candidate for the national team sometime soon, though; he has already played an ODI and T20I each.
The Chahar brothers are set to make history…
Stories like this one are enchanting and restore one’s faith in how belief can play such a major part in one’s successful career. Deepak was a promising pacer at the age of 16, but he was blatantly rejected by Greg Chappell, who was the chief of the Rajasthan Cricket Association academy back then.
From that to now constantly knocking the door for a selection in the Indian team, both the brothers deserve respect for the same. The talent they possess has been visible for a long time, but now, it is reflecting in their performances too. If things to turn in their favor, we might see another brother duo steer their way into the Indian team!
